Ahoy all,
Well, the accepting of applications for THE BEST JOB IN THE WORLD has officially come to an end. With over 34,000 applicants from 200 countries, I will really have to work hard in getting the attention of the Australians to seal the deal. And what better way to get someone’s attention than swinging a Bullroarer!
Confused? Wondering what a Bullroarer is? It’s a rounded slat of thin wood (carved from a sacred tree) attached to a long cord. Holding onto the cord, you whirl the instrument in the air; creating a controlled vibrato humming sound. This ancient musical instrument dates back to around 17,000 B.C., and was used to communicate over large distances, scare animals out of hiding and alert rival tribes.
The Bullroarer is considered sacred by Aborigines, and used for initiation rituals and burial ceremonies by men only. In South-East Australia the Bullroarer is used to channel the voice of Daramulum, a sacred God that can easily change his appearance from the tiniest animal to the largest giant.
In some tribes it is taboo for women, children and un-initiated men to even hear the Bullroarer. There are always exceptions though, as some men have nicknamed the Bullroarer their “wife-caller.”
So what’s a girl like me to do? I need to communicate some important information over this vast distance to Australia? I can’t upset Aborigines, or the Gods for that matter. I suppose I will just have to use the modern medium…the internet.
